C. Build Quality & Design
Below is the comprehensive breakdown of the P65’s build quality, construction and design.
1. Dimensions
The P65 scooter has dimensions of about 46.9 × 25 × 47.8 inches (1190 × 634 × 1214 mm) when it’s unfolded, and 46.9 × 25 × 22.3 inches (1190 × 634 × 567 mm) when it’s folded. This design makes it quite compact and easy to move around. It’s a suitable choice for individuals of varying heights and sizes.
With its wide 25-inch handlebars, the P65 scooter offers a comfortable and user-friendly riding experience, similar to the Segway P100s. It’s lightweight and less aggressive, making it easy to handle. However, the P100s outperforms it in terms of suspension and brakes.
Compared to other scooters in its category, like the Ninebot Max, G2, and F65, the P65 is larger in size, which means it’s not as compact for storage and transportation.
2. Foot Deck
The Segway P65 boasts an expansive foot deck with a textured, grippy surface, enhancing rider stability and ensuring a secure footing. This thoughtful design detail not only adds an extra layer of safety but also reflects Segway’s commitment to user comfort and convenience.
3. Charging Port
The scooter’s charging port is conveniently located at the front, just below the stem, ensuring easy access during recharging.
4. Weight & Payload
Weighing in at approximately 61.7 lbs (28 kg), the Segway P65 strikes a balance between portability and stability. It’s a scooter that can handle a wide range of riders, accommodating a maximum payload of 265 lbs (120 kg).
What sets it apart is its larger battery, which gives it an advantage over other scooters when operating at maximum weight capacity. The absence of front suspension ensures that ground clearance remains optimal even under this weight load.
In comparison, both the F65 and Max G2 can withstand a payload of 265 lbs, while the Widewheel Pro and Max G30 have a maximum weight capacity of 220 lbs. It’s worth noting that the P65 is slightly heavier than these scooters, but it offers a valuable feature known as “Walk Mode,” which can assist in moving the scooter when needed.
5. Lights
The P65 features a comprehensive lighting system, including:
- Front LED Lights: These built-in 10W front LED lights enhance visibility in low-light conditions, ensuring safer rides. There is a small separate daytime light too under the big night-time LED light.
- Tail Light: The taillight can be activated and brightens when brakes are applied, effectively indicating braking. However, it’s worth noting that a separate brake light would be a valuable addition.
6. Build Design
The scooter has a dark grey color, some orange on the fender and adjustable multi-color atmosphere lights on the side of deck board. There are also red brake light, and red and orange reflectors on the scooter.
The scooter has a fantastic and sleeky build design. However, some cables are exposed for no reason near the folding lock/lever on the base of tiller. The P100s also has a similar scenario.
7. Handlebars
The Segway P65’s adjustable handlebars allow riders to customize their riding position for optimal comfort. This feature caters to individuals ranging from 5’2” to 6’6” (160–200 cm) in height, contributing to the overall ergonomic design of the scooter.
The handlebars has an LED screen, control buttons similar to the P100s, and electric horn (red button), brake lever, thumb throttle and power button.
None of the F-series Ninebot scooters offer adjustable handlebars.
8. Colored LED Dashboard
The scooter’s colored LED dashboard provides riders with essential information at a glance.
The scooter’s LED can be used to control many functions, but I realized that some functions can only be accessed through Segway App.
9. Stem Sturdiness
I appreciate the robustness of the P65’s stem, enhancing stability during rides. This feature minimizes wobbling or vibrations, contributing to both durability and rider safety, especially at higher speeds. Many riders appreciate its sturdy build.
10. Tires
An exceptional feature of the P65 is its 10.5-inch self-sealing tubeless tires. These high-quality tubeless tires, commonly used in automobiles, stand out for being both resistant to punctures and capable of self-healing. This means you can enjoy a smooth and worry-free ride without the hassle of flat tires.
I have researched that compared to other scooter models like the Ninebot F-series, Ninebot Max G2, and G30P, the P65 boasts larger and somewhat superior tires. These tires are even bigger than the ones on the Mercane Widewheel Pro, which falls within a similar price range. However, it’s worth noting that the Widewheel Pro 2020 lives up to its name by offering even wider wheels and enhanced anti-flat and anti-puncture features.
Additionally, the P65’s tires are designed to provide excellent grip and traction on various terrains while minimizing the risk of skidding.
Despite the absence of front suspension, these tires with the rear suspension offer surprising shock absorption, making the scooter suitable for various road conditions.
11. Recommended Age and Height
Designed for riders aged 18–60 years old, it accommodates individuals with heights ranging from 5’2” to 6’6” (160–200 cm).
D. Features
1. Folding & Portability
The scooter has an easy-to-unlock folding lock/latch. It can be folded easily with a small force.
With 46.9 × 25 × 22.3 inches (1190 × 634 × 567 mm) folded size, the scooter can be fit into small places and transported with ease. However, with 61.7 lbs weight of the scooter, carrying it for some distance can be inconvenient. So the scooter features Walk Mode, so you can walk alongside the scooter at the speed of 2-3 mph.
You should consider the F65, Widewheel Pro or Ninebot Max if you want even more compact and small size, but trust me this is just slightly bigger than other scooters, and 3-5″ wider.
2. Battery
The scooter utilizes the NCAF4813A/NCAF4812D battery model, boasting a nominal voltage of 46.8 V, a maximum charging voltage of 54.6 V, a nominal energy capacity of 561 Wh, and a nominal capacity of 12 Ah. This robust battery configuration provides an impressive range of 40.4 miles at normal speeds and 20 miles at maximum speed (Sports mode).
3. Charging
Charger
The built-in charger supports input voltage ranging from 100–240 V ~ 50–60 Hz, 2.0 A MAX., and provides a max output voltage of 54.6 V with a rated output of 53.5 V, 3 A, delivering a total output power of 0.16 kW (160 W).
Fast Charging
The P65 scooter excels in its fast-charging capabilities, ensuring a rapid recharge time of just around 4 hours. This impressive feature closely rivals other notable models such as the GoTrax G4, Widewheel Pro, Ninebot F65, and Max.
Despite the swift recharge time, the P65 manages to maintain its outstanding performance and extended range, making it a compelling choice for riders seeking both efficiency and excellence in their electric scooters.
4. Speed Modes
The P65 offers various speed modes, including WALK mode, ASSIST mode, PARK mode, ECO mode, DRIVE mode, and SPORT mode, catering to different riding scenarios. The speed modes can be changed by using the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons on the right side of handlebars.
This scooter provides more speed modes than any scooter at the same price.
5. Water Resistance
With an IPX5 rating, a rarity among mid-tier scooters, the P65 is resistant to water and dust and can withstand light rain, making it suitable for various weather conditions. The Ninebot Max also provides IPX5 rating.
6. Atmosphere Lights
The scooter features subtle yet stylish atmosphere lights positioned on the side of the deck, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
7. Additional Accessories
Despite its strong performance and feature set, the scooter lacks certain accessories like phone/cup holders and rearview mirrors, although they can be installed separately. Nevertheless, it does feature a USB-C type charging port securely closed by a lid.
E. Ride Quality & Comfort
1. Handling & Control
With a substantial 35.6-inch wheelbase and a commendable ground clearance of 3.1 inches, the P65 perfectly blends stability with manoeuvrability. Its design is adept at handling various terrains, making it a versatile choice for cycling lanes, parks, campuses, and most flat road surfaces. The P65 truly shines in terms of stability, even when navigating the often uneven roads of Belgium.
The scooter balances stability and control with the low ground clearance and battery placed inside the footdeck.
The wide handlebars are purposefully crafted to enhance control and handling. Furthermore, their adjustable feature accommodates riders of different heights, ensuring a personalized and comfortable riding experience. When it comes to scooter control, the P65 scores an impressive 9 out of 10. Its easy to control than the P100s, Max and F65.
Notably, the scooter’s relatively low ground clearance, despite its size and weight, provides a significant advantage. This feature results in a more stable and easily manageable ride, especially on clean and even surfaces, setting it apart from many other scooters in the market.
2. Suspension & Shock Absorption
The P65 features rear suspension, compensating for the absence of front suspension. Additionally, its 10.5-inch self-sealing tubeless tires are designed to absorb small shocks, contributing to a comfortable ride even on uneven or low-quality roads. This feature eliminates concerns about punctures due to its tubeless and self-healing technology.
This scooter is best suited for smooth roads rather than rough terrains. It’s not about safety or durability issues but more about rider comfort. The scooter lacks front suspension, which can make it uncomfortable when you encounter bumps and potholes while riding. Also, the scooter has low ground clearance to give stable rides on even surfaces.
I would unbiasedly prefer the Ninebot Max G2 over the P65 when it comes to excellent suspension system and shock absorption.
3. Cruise Control
An attractive feature of the scooter is the availability of cruise control, which allows riders to maintain a consistent speed without continuous throttle input. This enhances the overall riding experience, particularly during longer journeys, by reducing the need for constant manual speed adjustments, promoting comfort and ease of use.
4. Seat
The P65 also offers a padded seat that significantly enhances rider comfort during longer journeys.
5. Segway App
The Segway app is your perfect companion for the NineBot P65 electric scooter. With user-friendly controls and real-time monitoring, it enhances your riding experience by providing crucial data and customization options right at your fingertips.
F. Performance
1. Motor
The Segway P65 electric scooter is equipped with an efficient brushless DC (BLDC) motor that boasts a typical nominal power output of 0.5 kW (500 W) and a maximum power of 980W. This motor plays a crucial role in delivering a fulfilling and dynamic riding experience.
The motor truly shines when the scooter is pushed to its limits in the fastest speed mode, reaching its peak performance at 980 W. This remarkable power output provides an impressive combination of torque, speed, and the ability to conquer hills with ease.
What’s particularly notable is that despite having a motor power equivalent to other scooters in the same price range, the Segway P65 manages to outperform them in terms of battery and overall performance. This makes it a standout choice for riders seeking a superior electric scooter experience within its class.
2. Top Speed
Although the Segway P65 electric scooter is advertised with a top speed of 25 mph, it typically reaches a commendable maximum speed of 23 mph under favorable conditions. When you consider this speed in conjunction with its impressive range, the P65 stands out in this regard.
In comparison, the F65 and Ninebot Max offer top speeds of 18 mph, the Max G2 reaches 22 mph, and the Widewheel Pro achieves a top speed of 26 mph, although it sacrifices some range for this higher speed. Notably, the Segway P65 stands as one of the best options in the 25 mph category, all while maintaining an attractive price point of approximately $1,000.
3. Torque and Acceleration
The BLDC motor is renowned for delivering consistent torque, resulting in not a super quick but smooth acceleration. The scooter employs a thumb throttle, offering a responsive and controlled start. This feature is particularly important for safely merging into traffic or navigating crowded areas.
The scooter reaches 0-15 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The scooter has nearly same accleration as other rival scooters but more range, hill climbing capabilities, and higher top speed.
4. Braking
The scooter features a reliable braking system, consisting of a front wheel dual-piston disc brake and a rear wheel electronic brake, ensuring effective stopping power.
According to personal experiences, it is observed that the front brake is significantly stronger than the rear drum e-brake, which can potentially lead to instability when applied suddenly at high speeds, especially when downhilling.
The brakes are easily activated by lever on the left side of the handlebars.
The scooter also features a high level of regenerative braking to give the range it promises.
5. Hill Climbing
The Segway P65’s motor effectively handles inclines. It performs well on 22% slopes, aligning with the manufacturer’s recommendations. In sports mode, it can even manage steep 30% slopes at a speed of 5-6 mph, showcasing its adaptability for different terrains.
Whether for urban commutes or tackling hilly paths, the P65 offers dependable performance on uphill journeys. However, for downhill travel, it’s advisable to adjust the rear e-brakes to ensure sufficient stopping power.
6. Off-Roading
While the Segway NineBot P65 is an impressive urban mobility solution, it’s essential to understand that it’s not suitable for off-roading. This limitation isn’t due to performance issues or tire traction concerns but stems from specific design factors. The scooter features a low ground clearance, lacks front suspension, and exhibits some instability when the front brake is applied on slippery surface.
For off-roading you should consier the Ninebot P100s, GT, Max G2 or the Widewheel Pro.
In summary, while the Segway P65 excels in urban environments and on well-maintained roads, it’s not designed to handle off-road adventures.
G. Safety & Security Features
1. Turn Signals
The inclusion of turn signals is a thoughtful addition to the Segway P65, enhancing rider safety by signaling intentions to other road users. Positioned at the fender alongside the tail light, and under the handlebars, these turn lights are strategically placed for clear visibility, contributing to safer and more confident turns during rides.
The trun signals are activated by pressing a button on the left side of handlebars.
There are smaller, additional turn signals on the sides of the front part of the deckboard, which are actually the atmosphere ambient lighting working as turn signals.
2. Battery Management System
Equipped with comprehensive protection features, including over-heating, short circuit, over-current, over-discharge, and over-charge protection, the scooter’s battery prioritizes safety and longevity.
3. Anti-Theft Alarm
The anti-theft alarm in the Segway P65 is crucial for deterring theft and providing peace of mind. It alerts owners and nearby individuals to unauthorized activity.
However, it’s important to note that the anti-theft alarm has a minor issue in this scooter. While transporting the scooter, the alarm may start ringing, so it should be turned off before transporting it in other vehicles. Despite this minor inconvenience during transport, its advantage lies in enhancing the scooter’s security.
4. NFC Unlocking
NFC unlocking offers convenience and efficiency, allowing riders to quickly access the scooter without the need for keys or access codes. Its advantage is in simplifying the user experience, saving time, and eliminating the need to carry physical keys or remember codes.
H. Segway Ninebot P65 Review : Is it Worth the Money?
The Segway Ninebot P65 electric scooter offers an appealing package of features. With a robust 500-980W motor, it can hit a top speed of 25 MPH and travel a remarkable 40.4 miles on a single charge. The scooter’s build quality and design are reliable, with features like grippy foot deck, adjustable handlebars, and self-sealing tubeless tires enhancing the overall riding experience. Safety measures, including turn signals and anti-theft features, are notable additions.
